We're excited to celebrate Aya, a talented Structural Design Engineer who joined QED six months ago at our London office. We recently had the pleasure of interviewing Aya to learn more about her, her experiences and insights during her time with us.
What is your name and how long have you been working at QED?
My name is Aya Alghadhanfri, and I joined the company about 6 months ago.
What are your hobbies and interests?
I enjoy playing tennis, padel, and badminton. I also like running in my free time. I do a 5K morning run every Sunday, and I play either tennis or padel once a week.
Which office are you based in and how do you travel to work?
I am based in the London office, and I travel to work by tube. It takes me about an hour.
What is your favourite thing about where you live in?
I love London because there’s always something to do, whether it’s sports, art exhibitions, concerts, or attending plays and shows. I also live in a lovely area, which is very green and has a beautiful riverside. This allows me to enjoy outdoor runs and walks in fresh air with stunning views.
When did you go to university and what did you study?
I attended Gaziantep University in 2016 and completed my master's at Kingston University in 2021. I studied Civil Engineering for four years in Turkey and later pursued a master's in Structural Design and Construction Management in London, graduating with distinction. What I enjoyed most about my master's program was its focus on project-based work rather than exams. The projects were closely aligned with real-world scenarios, making it a great transition between academic study and professional work.
What was your last job like and how have you progressed since then?
I worked at a structural design consultancy in London, as a Graduate Structural Engineer for two years before joining QED. I started as a graduate, eager to learn about real-world projects and the work culture in London’s construction field. My progress is gradual but steady, as I am gaining more experience and taking on increasingly complex tasks.
Are there any challenges you have had to overcome since working at QED?
Everything at QED has been positive so far. I haven’t faced significant challenges, but I’m always keen to learn and improve.
What have you enjoyed about your time at QED so far?
I’ve enjoyed the welcoming atmosphere, the support from my colleagues, and the opportunities to work on interesting projects. I feel like I’ve settled in well and have received positive feedback from my team. I love the collaborative and supportive environment at QED, and the work has been both challenging and rewarding.
Are there any jobs that stand out? If so, why?
All the projects I’ve worked on so far have been great learning experiences. Nothing specific stands out, but I’ve enjoyed the variety and the opportunity to contribute.
Are there any additional comments you wish to make?
No additional comments, but I’m very happy to be part of the QED team and look forward to continuing to grow here.

QED Structures’ Christmas Event: A Weekend Full of Fun, Laughter, and Team Spirit
Last weekend, QED Structures hosted a Christmas event like no other, filled with laughter, excitement, and plenty of memorable moments. Engineers and non-engineers alike from our offices in Hove, London, Manchester, and Barcelona gathered at the stunning 'Hollywood House' in Blackbrook for a weekend packed with activities, relaxation, and the perfect balance of team bonding and free time. Here's a look into our unforgettable weekend:
Friday: Settling In and Kicking Off the Fun
After arriving at the house and settling in, the group had lots of free time to unwind and enjoy the beautiful surroundings. Some relaxed by playing a few rounds of pool, others soaked in the hot tub, while a brave few went sledding or took a refreshing walk in the snow. It was the perfect opportunity to reconnect with colleagues in a relaxed, festive atmosphere.
The evening began with pizza and our much-anticipated Secret Santa gift exchange. It was a heartwarming moment that sparked plenty of laughter and appreciation. But the fun didn’t stop there—teams faced off in a hilarious game of charades, where the competitive spirit was alive! As the night went on, everyone came together for some joyful karaoke. Drinks, games, and singing created an atmosphere of pure joy and camaraderie.
Saturday: A Day Full of Surprises and Teamwork
Saturday morning started early for some of us, with a hearty English breakfast buffet prepared by our dedicated breakfast team. Then after breakfast, whether it was roasting marshmallows in the cozy Arctic cabin, taking a walk through the beautiful snowy landscape, or engaging in a friendly pool tournament, everyone found a way to spend the morning with their own unique twist.
In the afternoon, we split into teams to prepare our Christmas dinner. From peeling and chopping to cooking and clearing up, each group worked together to bring a delicious feast to life. The teamwork on display was truly inspiring, and it was wonderful to see everyone stepping up to make the meal a success. The result? A mouthwatering spread that was worth every bit of effort!
When it came time for dinner, everyone was looking fabulous, showcasing their finest outfits and new sides of themselves. After a group photo to capture the moment, it was time to dig into the delicious meal that we had all worked so hard to create.
The Hollywood Quiz: Lights, Camera, Action!
After dinner, the excitement continued with the ‘Hollywood Quiz,’ where teams competed to answer questions across a variety of categories: Hollywood, Hollywood Stars, Movies, Movie Quotes, and Theme Songs. It sparked plenty of lively discussions, but only one team could come out on top. Congratulations to the winning team—Nigel, Izzy, Sam, and Rob! They took home the prize and earned the bragging rights of being the smartest Hollywood buffs in the room.
Casino Night: Feeling Lucky?
To cap off the evening, it was time for our casino event! Two professional croupiers brought the thrill of Blackjack and Roulette to our lower-ground casino room. For the next two hours, everyone had the chance to test their luck and strategy, placing bets and trying their hand at the tables. At the end of the night, the person with the most chips in hand was crowned the winner, taking home the grand prize.
It was the perfect way to end a truly unforgettable weekend!

QED Structures’ Christmas event was a celebration of teamwork, friendship, and fun. Whether it was the snow-filled outdoor adventures, the delicious Christmas dinner, the competitive quiz, or the thrilling casino night, every moment was filled with joy and laughter. Getting Ready for the Christmas Spirit at QED Structures!
As the first week of December rolls in, we can’t help but get excited for the holiday season! To kick off the festivities, we’ve once again transformed our office, with colourful lights, a beautifully decorated Christmas tree, and festive ribbons that bring cheer to our workplace. There’s no better way to get into the Christmas spirit than by surrounding ourselves with stunning decorations of the season!
A Sustainable Christmas at QED Structures
This year, we wanted our holiday decorations to reflect not only our festive mood but also our commitment to sustainability. In keeping with our eco-friendly values, we took a creative approach and decided to make our own Christmas decorations using recycled and waste materials.
From reindeer and gingerbread houses made out of cardboard to a snowman crafted from polystyrene and delicate snowflakes made from paper, we’ve brought the holiday magic to life in a way that’s kind to the planet.
At QED Structures, we believe in celebrating the holidays with a mindful approach that reflects our values. Whether it's through sustainable decorations or supporting eco-conscious initiatives, we are proud to be a part of a community that cares for both people and the planet.
Happy holidays from all of us at QED Structures! We wish you a festive season filled with joy, laughter, and sustainability.

Arbour Vale School Update: Expanding Facilities for Specialist SEN Education
We’re proud to announce the successful delivery of four additional classrooms at Arbour Vale School, a specialist school for students with special educational needs (SEN). This expansion was designed to meet the growing demand for specialised educational spaces, and our team ensured minimal disruption to the school by utilising modular construction.
A Sustainable, Modular Solution
To provide a quick and efficient build, we used Cross Laminated Timber (CLT), supplied by Lamella, as the core material. The classrooms were prefabricated offsite, ensuring a faster, more accurate build with less waste. The modular construction also meant we could complete the project with minimal disruption to the school’s daily activities.
Overcoming Site Challenges
The site presented some unique challenges, including a Thames Water sewer running beneath the area where the new classrooms were to be placed. To overcome this, we designed and installed a steel transfer structure, which worked perfectly with the modular approach. This solution ensured the building was securely placed without interfering with the existing infrastructure.
A Positive Impact for the Future
The new classrooms are now fully operational, providing modern, energy-efficient spaces for the students of Arbour Vale. This project demonstrates how innovation, sustainable practices, and collaboration can create high-quality educational environments that benefit both the school and the surrounding community.
We are excited to see the lasting impact these new facilities will have.

A Hauntingly Good Time: How We Celebrated Halloween at the Office
Halloween is always a fun and festive time of year, and at QED Structures, we made sure to embrace the spooky season with some seriously spooky (and fun!) office activities. From a wild costume contest to cupcake decorating, an Office-themed "Trick or Treat," and an after-work happy hour with games, this year's Halloween celebration was one for the books! Here's a look at how we brought the spooky season to life in the office and had a fang-tastic time doing it.
1. Costume Contest: Who Wore It Best?
What’s Halloween without a little costume competition? This year, our theme was characters from a movie/TV Show. Our office was filled with all sorts of creative costumes, from Ghostface and The Grim Reaper to Tracy Turnblad and Kermit the Frog. We kicked things off with our annual costume contest, and the creativity on display did not disappoint!
Employees went all out, and the results were a hilarious and impressive array of costumes. The competition was fierce, but in the end, we crowned the winners:
3rd Place: Joe as Georgie from It and Chloe as Dwight from The Office.
2nd Place: Ian as the unforgettable Beetlejuice.
1st Place: Samantha stole the show as M3GAN, winning the £50 prize!
Of course, the best part was the laughter and camaraderie that filled the office as everyone entered the office showing off their costumes. The costumes may have been spooky, but the good vibes were truly contagious!
2. Cupcake Decorating: A Sweet Treat for All
After all the costume excitement, it was time for something sweet! We hosted a cupcake decorating lunch, and our office turned into a mini bakery. Everyone was given one vanilla cupcake and one chocolate cupcake along with an array of toppings — coloured frosting, sprinkles, chocolate buttons, and more.
Some employees went all-in with detailed designs, creating little pumpkins, monsters, and graveyard cupcakes. Others kept it simple with lots of colours, sprinkles and chocolate.
It was a sweet, sugar-filled break from the usual workday hustle, and a great way to bond over some tasty treats. And we finished it off with pizza and laughs!!
3. Office-Themed 'Trick or Treat': Spooky Surprises Around Every Corner
Who says "Trick or Treating" is just for kids? This year, we brought the Halloween tradition to the office with an office-themed "Trick or Treat." Rather than sweets and scares, we had everyone pick an office-themed “Trick or Treat” at random. Whilst some people had the treat of leaving work 30 minutes early or having a treasure hunt to find the hidden £20, others had to clean the George Foreman Grill or clean out the fridge!
It was a fun way to spread some Halloween cheer throughout the office and surprise a few people with an unexpected trick-or-treat, keeping the festive mood going all day long.
4. After-Work Games & Drinks: A Bewitching Happy Hour
We finished the workday early at 4:30 but, the Halloween festivities were far from over. We wrapped up our celebration with an after-work happy hour, complete with spooky cocktails, beer, snacks, and games.
These games were a fun way to wind down the day and share some laughs, and definitely helped set the mood for a relaxed and enjoyable evening. It was the perfect way to cap off a day of creativity, camaraderie, and spooky spirit.
Why We Love Halloween at the Office
Halloween is a special time for us at QED Structures because it gives us an excuse to break out of our usual routines, have some fun, and connect with colleagues in a more relaxed, creative way. Whether it’s showing off our costume creativity, decorating cupcakes, trick-or-treat at work, or enjoying an after-hours happy hour, these activities help bring us closer together as a team.
At QED Structures, we believe in creating a workplace where fun, collaboration, and creativity are always encouraged—and Halloween is the perfect opportunity to celebrate all of those things. This year's Halloween celebration was a blast, and we can’t wait to see what next year has in store!
From our spooky office to your screens, we hope you enjoyed reading about our festive day as much as we enjoyed celebrating it!

a day of fun and competition: our go-karting company outing
On the 6th of September, our team traded in our office chairs for racing seats as we headed out for an exhilarating day of go-karting! This company outing was a perfect blend of fun, competition, and team bonding, creating lasting memories and strengthening our workplace camaraderie. Here’s a recap of our thrilling day on the track!
revving up for adventure
We kicked off the day with a casual morning at the office, where excitement was high, anticipating the day ahead. After fuelling up, we made our way to Buckmore Park. The Hove, London and Manchester offices gathered in the go-karting lobby, where everyone was buzzing with excitement. It was the perfect opportunity to mingle and fuel up before we hit the track. The atmosphere was charged with energy, setting the stage for an unforgettable experience.
the thrill of the race
After a quick safety briefing, it was every racer for themselves! As we climbed into our go-karts, the adrenaline kicked in! Racing around the wet track, navigating sharp turns, and competing for the fastest lap brought out everyone’s competitive spirit. Watching colleagues zoom past—or trying to catch up—added an extra layer of excitement to the day. We laughed and cheered each other on and playfully challenged one another.
building connections
Beyond the thrill of racing, the day provided an excellent opportunity to connect with colleagues outside the usual office environment. Whether celebrating a close finish or sharing tips on how to navigate the track, the day fostered deeper relationships among team members.
reflecting on the experience
After several rounds of racing, we gathered to reflect on our experiences. Conversations flowed as we shared highlights and laughed over near-misses. This reflection not only enhanced our understanding of each other but also reinforced the importance of collaboration in our daily work.
celebrating our achievements
After a series of thrilling races, we gathered to celebrate our top finishers – and of course, we let the boss win. The atmosphere was filled with laughter as everyone shared their favourite moments from the day. Recognising individual achievements created a sense of accomplishment and unity within the team.
looking ahead
Our go-karting outing was a fantastic reminder of the importance of stepping away from our desks and bonding with other colleagues as we enjoyed each other’s company. The lessons learned about communication, encouragement, and friendly competition will undoubtedly carry over into our work environment and enhance our workplace culture.

August 25, 2023
In the ever-evolving realm of construction, innovation continues to reshape the way we build our structures. One such innovation that has gained significant attention is Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT). With its environmentally friendly properties, structural versatility, and potential to revolutionise modern methods of construction, CLT is emerging as a game-changer in the industry. In this blog, we'll delve into the world of CLT and explore how it's transforming the way we create sustainable, efficient, and aesthetically pleasing buildings.
The Rise of CLT: A Brief Overview
Cross-Laminated Timber, often referred to as CLT, is an engineered wood product that consists of layers of timber boards stacked perpendicular to one another and bonded with adhesive. This cross-lamination enhances the material's structural stability and load-bearing capacity, making it suitable for a wide range of construction applications. Initially developed in Europe, CLT has gradually gained recognition worldwide as a sustainable alternative to traditional building materials like concrete and steel.
Benefits of Using CLT in Modern Methods of Construction:
1. Sustainability at Its Core
In an era where sustainability is paramount, CLT shines as an eco-friendly building solution. It's crafted from renewable resources—wood sourced from sustainably managed forests. Unlike concrete and steel, CLT production generates fewer carbon emissions, making it a crucial player in mitigating the construction industry's environmental impact.
2. Speed and Efficiency
CLT panels are prefabricated off-site, leading to faster construction times and reduced on-site labour requirements. This modular approach not only accelerates project completion but also minimises disruptions to local communities and reduces waste generated during construction.
3. Design Flexibility and Aesthetic Appeal
