April 14, 2025

Last Friday, some of our team from our Hove office took time out of their workday to participate in a beach clean. This beach clean was arranged by our social values committee as part of our ongoing commitment to community engagement and environmental responsibility. At QED Structures we see the importance of giving back to the community and strive to contribute where we can.

The beach clean provided a fantastic opportunity for colleagues to come together outside of the office and contribute to a meaningful cause. We used litter-picking tools and bin bags to carefully collect all the rubbish to promote a cleaner, safer environment for the public and local wildlife.

We’re proud to support initiatives that not only benefit our immediate surroundings but also reflect the long-term sustainability goals we strive for across all areas of our work, including our engineering projects. Events like this beach clean are a reminder that even small actions can have a significant impact when we work together.

A big thank you to everyone from the Hove office who volunteered their time and energy — your efforts are greatly appreciated.

Celebrating the Hydrotherapy Pool at Philip Southcote School

April 4, 2025

We are thrilled to have attended the grand opening of the new Hydrotherapy Pool at Philip Southcote School in Surrey! As the structural designers for this vital facility, we are proud to contribute to the Hydrotherapy Pool, which is an integral part of the physiotherapy and occupational therapy that the school provides to students.

Our Role in the Project

Working alongside Morgan Sindall (Main Contractor), Pellings (Project Manager), Edgingtons Architects, Tournay Godfrey (MEP Consultants), QED Structures undertook the structural and civil engineering for the Hydrotherapy Pool and associated structures. A special thanks to Myrtha Pools (pool specialists), and Barr & Wray (pool equipment consultants) for their invaluable contributions.

Structural Design and Construction

The structure is a mix of steel frame and traditional masonry wall construction. The steel frame is located over the main pool room, while the traditional masonry wall construction is used in the changing rooms and entrance area. The pool structure features a steel-braced frame on concrete foundations, with load-bearing blockwork and a timber-joisted roof for the changing and pool facilities.

Enhancing Accessibility

A significant feature of the pool is the hoist system, which allows students to get in and out of the pool and into the changing room with ease, making the overall experience much more pleasant. We coordinated with the hoist manufacturers to ensure the hoist structure was fully accounted for structurally and provided secondary steelwork to follow the hoist tracking locations.

Overcoming Challenges

One of the main considerations that made this job slightly unusual was the pool itself, requiring structural solutions without loading up the swimming pool retaining walls. Another key challenge was the swimming pool balance tank, housed outside the building footprint, which impacted our foundation solution and required coordination with the entire design team throughout the project.

We installed a reinforced concrete ring beam into the top of the mass concrete footings to span horizontally, ensuring that when the tank was installed or replaced at a later stage, the footings would remain stable.

Conclusion

We are proud to have been part of this project and to contribute to the well-being of the students at Philip Southcote School. Thank you to everyone involved in making this project a success!

Innovative Alternatives to Traditional Cement

Cement is a key ingredient in concrete, making it essential for infrastructure development worldwide. From buildings and bridges to roads…

April 2, 2025

Cement is a key ingredient in concrete, making it essential for infrastructure development worldwide. From buildings and bridges to roads and dams, cement is the backbone of modern construction. However, the environmental impact of cement production is significant, accounting for around 8% of global CO2 emissions. This high level of emissions is primarily due to the energy-intensive process of producing cement and the chemical reactions involved. To mitigate these environmental impacts and reduce our carbon footprint, it is crucial to explore and adopt more sustainable alternatives to traditional cement.

Why Replace Cement:

Traditional cement production not only releases large amounts of CO2 but also depletes natural resources through the extraction of raw materials like limestone and clay. The process involves heating these materials to high temperatures, which consumes a substantial amount of energy and results in significant greenhouse gas emissions. By replacing cement with more sustainable alternatives, we can reduce these emissions and conserve natural resources. Many of these alternatives utilise industrial by-products or waste materials, turning potential pollutants into valuable resources for construction.

Considerations:

Availability of Materials: Not all replacement materials are available everywhere. The availability of alternatives like fly ash, ground granulated blast-furnace slag (GGBS), silica fume, and rice husk ash can vary depending on regional industrial activities and agricultural practices. As a result, this variability can affect the feasibility of using these materials in certain locations.

Mix Design Adjustments: Incorporating cement replacements often requires adjustments to the concrete mix design. These changes may involve new formulations to ensure that the concrete meets the desired performance criteria. Additionally, engineers and construction professionals need to be aware of these adjustments and have the expertise to implement them effectively.

Slower Setting Time: Some cement replacements can slow down the setting and curing process of concrete. While this can be beneficial for certain applications, it may pose challenges for projects that require quick formwork removal or fast construction timelines. Understanding the setting characteristics of these materials is essential for planning and scheduling construction activities.

Public Awareness: There is a need to raise awareness among engineers, construction professionals, and stakeholders about the benefits and potential of cement replacements. Education and training programs can help bridge this knowledge gap and promote the adoption of sustainable construction practices.

The Future:

Research and Innovation: Ongoing research and innovation are critical to developing new sustainable materials and improving existing alternatives. Furthermore, advances in material science and engineering can lead to the discovery of more efficient and environmentally friendly cement replacements.

Circular Economy: Transitioning towards a circular economy in construction involves rethinking how we use resources. By viewing waste as a resource, we can create a more sustainable and resilient construction industry. This approach encourages the recycling and repurposing of materials, reducing the need for virgin resources and minimising waste.

Regulatory Support: Government policies and regulations play a vital role in promoting the use of sustainable alternatives to cement. Incentives, standards, and guidelines can encourage the construction industry to adopt greener practices. Regulatory support can also drive investment in research and development, accelerating the transition to more sustainable construction methods.

By exploring and adopting sustainable alternatives to traditional cement, we can significantly reduce the environmental impact of construction. These efforts not only contribute to lowering CO2 emissions but also promote the conservation of natural resources and the development of a circular economy. As we continue to innovate and raise awareness, the future of construction looks greener and more sustainable.

You can look into various replacements from ICE and Concrete Society – some are by-products of industrial processes, some are natural.

February 24, 2025

We are thrilled to share the story of Albion Street refurbishment, the proud winner of the Best Small Social Housing Development at the LABC Awards. This remarkable project has transformed a once-derelict building into much-needed homes for six families in West Sussex. Witnessing this building come back to life has been fantastic, and we are proud to have played a part in its success.

The refurbishment involved a pair of dilapidated semi-detached houses that were in very poor condition. The existing building had substantial cracking in several load-bearing walls, and the roof had been leaking for years, causing significant damage to the timber roof and floor structure. The project required the removal of main load-bearing walls, remodelling of the internal layout, and the introduction of a roof conversion that joined the two semi-detached houses together. These structural challenges were met with innovative solutions and expert advice.

We extend our heartfelt congratulations to our refurbishment project partners for their collaboration and expertise: Cheesmur Building Contractors, MGAC, Adur & Worthing Councils, and Cityzen Limited. Their dedication and skill were instrumental in bringing this project to fruition.

I feel like I’ve settled in well and have received positive feedback from my team. I love the collaborative and supportive environment at QED, and the work has been both challenging and rewarding.

Are there any jobs that stand out? If so, why?

All the projects I’ve worked on so far have been great learning experiences. Nothing specific stands out, but I’ve enjoyed the variety and the opportunity to contribute.

Are there any additional comments you wish to make?

No additional comments, but I’m very happy to be part of the QED team and look forward to continuing to grow here.

December 16, 2024

Last weekend, colleagues from QED Structures’ offices in Hove, London, Manchester and Barcelona gathered for a Christmas trip at the beautiful Hollywood House in Blackbrook. The weekend was an opportunity to step away from day-to-day routines, connect with colleagues from across the business, and enjoy a mix of activities, relaxation and team-building in a winter setting.

Friday

Upon arrival, guests took time to settle in and make the most of the impressive surroundings. Whether it was enjoying a few games of pool, relaxing in the hot tub, heading out for a snowy walk, or even sledding, there was something for everyone.

The evening began with a casual dinner of pizza and our annual Secret Santa gift exchange, which brought about lots of good moments. This was followed by a lively round of charades and some karaoke. It was a relaxed and enjoyable start to the weekend, with a great mix of energy and good company.

Saturday

Saturday morning started with a full English breakfast, kindly prepared by our dedicated breakfast team, who woke up early to make it. The rest of the morning was free for people to enjoy the space in their own way; some roasted marshmallows in the log cabin, others had a pool tournament, while many went out for a walk through the snowy landscape.

In the afternoon, we split into teams to prepare our Christmas dinner. From peeling and chopping to cooking and clearing up, each group worked together and contributed to the meal. The teamwork shown was impressive, and it was wonderful to see everyone stepping up to make the meal a success.

As the evening approached, everyone changed into their evening wear for dinner. Before taking our seats, we paused for a group photo—a chance to capture the moment and appreciate the setting.

The Hollywood Quiz:

After dinner, we hosted the 'Hollywood Quiz', where teams faced off across a variety of film-related categories, from famous quotes to theme tunes. It was a close competition filled with good-natured rivalry and plenty of laughs. Congratulations to the winning team (Nigel, Izzy, Sam and Rob) who walked away with both the prize and the title of the evening’s quiz champions.

Casino Night:

The evening concluded with a professionally hosted casino night, complete with Blackjack and Roulette tables. Two experienced croupiers created an authentic experience as guests tried their hand at the games and competed for the top prize. At the end of the night, the guest with the most chips took home the grand prize.

It was the perfect way to end an unforgettable weekend!

Wrapping Up

This Christmas trip was a fitting way to round off the year. It was a great opportunity for everyone from different offices to come together, connect with colleagues, and create memories in a relaxed and informal setting. From the shared cooking and games to the laughter and friendly competition, it was a celebration of the team spirit that defines QED Structures.

We can’t wait for next year’s event - until then, here’s to a joyful holiday season and another year of success and teamwork at QED Structures!

December 4, 2024

As the first week of December begins, we can’t help but get excited for the holiday season! To start the festivities, our office has been decorated with seasonal lights, a Christmas tree, ribbons and other subtle festive touches throughout the space. This brings a warm and welcoming feel to the workplace.

A More Sustainable Christmas

This year, we’ve taken a more sustainable approach to our decorations, in line with our ongoing commitment to environmental responsibility. Many of our festive elements have been hand-crafted using recycled and waste materials, instead of buying new decorations.

From cardboard reindeer and gingerbread houses to a snowman built from polystyrene offcuts and intricate paper snowflakes, our decorations are not only festive but environmentally conscious. It’s a creative and meaningful way to celebrate the season while minimising waste.

At QED Structures, we aim to keep sustainability in mind with everything we do, including how we mark special occasions. Our approach to the holidays this year reflects that commitment, celebrating in a way that’s both joyful and considerate of our environmental impact.

Happy holidays from all of us at QED Structures! We wish you a festive season filled with joy, laughter, and sustainability.

December 2, 2024

Arbour Vale School Update: Expanding Facilities for Specialist SEN Education

We’re proud to announce the successful delivery of four additional classrooms at Arbour Vale School, a specialist school for students with special educational needs (SEN). This expansion was designed to meet the growing demand for specialised educational spaces, and our team ensured minimal disruption to the school by utilising modular construction.

A Sustainable, Modular Solution

To provide a quick and efficient build, we used Cross Laminated Timber (CLT), supplied by Lamella, as the core material. The classrooms were prefabricated offsite, ensuring a faster, more accurate build with less waste. The modular construction also meant we could complete the project with minimal disruption to the school’s daily activities.

Overcoming Site Challenges

The site presented some unique challenges, including a Thames Water sewer running beneath the area where the new classrooms were to be placed. To overcome this, we designed and installed a steel transfer structure, which worked perfectly with the modular approach. This solution ensured the building was securely placed without interfering with the existing infrastructure.

A Positive Impact for the Future

The new classrooms are now fully operational, providing modern, energy-efficient spaces for the students of Arbour Vale. This project demonstrates how innovation, sustainable practices, and collaboration can create high-quality educational environments that benefit both the school and the surrounding community.

We are excited to see the lasting impact these new facilities will have.

November 12, 2024

Halloween at QED Structures is a great opportunity to take a break from the usual routine and spend time together in a more informal setting. This year’s activities included a costume contest, cupcake decorating, an office-themed "Trick or Treat," and after-work drinks with games. Here’s a look at how the day unfolded.

Halloween Costume Contest

We started the day with a costume contest, themed around movie and TV show characters. The effort and attention to detail were impressive, with appearances from characters including Ghostface, the Grim Reaper, Tracy Turnblad, and Kermit the Frog.

The competition was close, but in the end, our winners were:

  • 3rd Place: Joe as Georgie from It, and Chloe as Dwight from The Office
  • 2nd Place: Ian as the unforgettable Beetlejuice
  • 1st Place: Samantha stole the show as M3GAN, taking home the £50 prize

More than anything it was a great way to start the day and an opportunity to come together, admire each other’s efforts, and have a friendly competition across the team.

Cupcake Decorating

Around lunchtime, we did some cupcake decorating where everyone was given one vanilla cupcake and one chocolate cupcake along with lots of toppings - coloured frosting, sprinkles, chocolate buttons, and more.

Some took a creative approach, designing seasonal themes like pumpkins or spooky faces, while others kept it simple with lots of colours, sprinkles and chocolate. We wrapped up the session with pizza and a chance to chat.

Office-Themed 'Trick or Treat'

We brought a light-hearted version of 'Trick or Treat' into the office with randomised challenges and small rewards. Some people drew a treat - such as leaving work early or finding a hidden £20 - while others were tasked with clearing out the fridge or cleaning the George Foreman Grill.

It was a simple way to keep the atmosphere relaxed and bring a bit of variety to the day.

After-Work Games & Drinks

The day ended with an informal get-together after work. From 4:30pm, the team gathered for drinks, snacks, and a few games.

It was a relaxed environment where people could chat, unwind, and spend time with colleagues they might not work with day to day. Some took part in the games, while others caught up over a drink.

Events like this help to reinforce the informal connections that make a big difference to collaboration across teams. It was a great way to close out the Halloween celebrations and end the day on a positive note.

Why We Love Halloween at the Office

At QED Structures, we value a working environment that balances productivity with a sense of community. Events like this give us a chance to step back, enjoy each other’s company, and maintain the strong team dynamic we rely on every day.

Thanks to everyone who got involved this year.

a day of fun and competition: our go-karting company outing

On the 6th of September, our teams from our Hove, London, and Manchester offices met at Buckmore Park for a day of go-karting. It was a welcome change of pace and an opportunity to step away from our usual routines, connect in person, and enjoy some light-hearted competition.

Getting Started

We began the day with a casual morning at the office, before going to Buckmore Park. All offices met in the lobby, where there was time for everyone to catch up and get ready for the races. It was a friendly atmosphere and a good opportunity to get to know some of the new faces. there was a nice range of experience with some who have raced before and some first-time drivers.

on the track

Following a safety briefing, we suited up and took to the track. Wet conditions added a bit of challenge, but also made for some exciting moments. Tight corners, surprise drifts, and competitive lap times brought out everyone’s best efforts.

building connections

What stood out most was the chance to connect with colleagues from different teams and locations. Whether sharing driving tips or reflecting on the races, the day gave us time to talk, laugh, and build stronger working relationships.

reflecting on the experience

After several rounds of racing, we gathered to reflect on our experiences. This reflection not only enhanced our understanding of each other but also reinforced the importance of collaboration in our daily work. Recognising individual achievements created a sense of accomplishment and unity within the team.

looking ahead

The outing was a great reminder of the value in stepping outside the workplace to connect and recharge. This experience helps reinforce collaboration and mutual support making our teams successful and enhancing our workplace culture.

August 25, 2023

In the ever-evolving realm of construction, innovation continues to reshape the way we build our structures. One such innovation that has gained significant attention is Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT). With its environmentally friendly properties, structural versatility, and potential to revolutionise modern methods of construction, CLT is emerging as a game-changer in the industry. In this blog, we'll delve into the world of CLT and explore how it's transforming the way we create sustainable, efficient, and aesthetically pleasing buildings.

The Rise of CLT: A Brief Overview

Cross-Laminated Timber, often referred to as CLT, is an engineered wood product that consists of layers of timber boards stacked perpendicular to one another and bonded with adhesive. This cross-lamination enhances the material's structural stability and load-bearing capacity, making it suitable for a wide range of construction applications. Initially developed in Europe, CLT has gradually gained recognition worldwide as a sustainable alternative to traditional building materials like concrete and steel.

Benefits of Using CLT in Modern Methods of Construction:

1. Sustainability at Its Core

In an era where sustainability is paramount, CLT shines as an eco-friendly building solution. It's crafted from renewable resources—wood sourced from sustainably managed forests. Unlike concrete and steel, CLT production generates fewer carbon emissions, making it a crucial player in mitigating the construction industry's environmental impact.

2. Speed and Efficiency

CLT panels are prefabricated off-site, leading to faster construction times and reduced on-site labour requirements. This modular approach not only accelerates project completion but also minimises disruptions to local communities and reduces waste generated during construction.

3. Design Flexibility and Aesthetic Appeal

CLT's versatility extends to design flexibility. Its exceptional strength-to-weight ratio allows architects and engineers to explore creative architectural forms while maintaining structural integrity. Additionally, the natural warmth and beauty of wood create inviting and aesthetically pleasing spaces, contributing to occupants' overall well-being.

4. Seismic Performance and Durability

CLT's layered construction grants it inherent seismic resistance, making it a robust choice for earthquake-prone regions. With proper maintenance, CLT structures have the potential to last for decades, offering a durable and reliable option for long-term construction projects.

5. Improved Insulation and Thermal Performance

Wood's inherent insulating properties, coupled with CLT's layering, result in impressive thermal performance. CLT buildings can maintain stable indoor temperatures, reducing the need for excessive heating or cooling and contributing to energy efficiency.

Challenges and Considerations:

While CLT offers numerous benefits, there are some challenges to be mindful of. These include fire resistance, moisture control, and ensuring a consistent supply of quality timber. However, ongoing research and advancements in CLT technology are addressing these challenges, making the material even more viable for a broader range of projects.

In conclusion, Cross-Laminated Timber represents a paradigm shift in modern construction methods, offering a blend of sustainability, efficiency, and architectural freedom. As the world continues to prioritise eco-friendly solutions and innovative approaches to building, CLT stands as a testament to human ingenuity and the potential to create a harmonious balance between nature and urban development. With its remarkable attributes and ongoing advancements, CLT is undoubtedly carving a path towards a greener and more sustainable construction future.

August 25, 2023

Almost a year on since our surprise Barcelona team-building event, and we are still talking about it! It was a pivotal chapter in our company's story of growth and collaboration.

As we reflect on the memories made and connections formed during those days, it's clear that in-person interactions have a unique power to bridge virtual divides, foster personal relationships, enhance communication, and solidify a strong company culture.

But why are team-building experiences so important for a healthy and productive office environment? This is our hot take:

Cultivating Personal Relationships

Beyond the office, we discovered more about one another. From team challenges to strolls along the beach, our shared experiences during the trip created a space for personal conversations that deepened our understanding of one another. These personal connections are crucial in understanding each team member's strengths and challenges, ultimately leading to more effective teamwork back in the office.

Strengthening Trust and Communication

Engaging in team-building activities such as silly challenges and collaborative tasks required us to communicate, strategize, and problem-solve in real-time. These activities not only showcased the diverse skill sets within our team but also reinforced the importance of clear communication and the value of leveraging each other's strengths. The trust that blossomed during these activities translated directly into improved teamwork and project execution upon our return.

Fostering a Vibrant Company Culture

The Barcelona experience breathed life into our company culture. By sharing unforgettable moments, inside jokes, and laughter, we established a sense of belonging that extends beyond work tasks. This sense of belonging is a driving force in employee satisfaction, as it cultivates an environment where individuals feel valued, appreciated, and motivated to contribute their best to the team's success.

Reaping the Benefits of In-Person Interaction

The tangible outcomes of our Barcelona adventure soon became evident back at the office. The increased unity translated into improved communication, faster problem-solving, and a palpable surge in creativity. The bonds we forged during those sunny days in Barcelona continue to impact our daily interactions, making us more efficient, resilient, and adaptive in navigating the challenges of our professional journey.
